《Uqaljai.

The gender construction in the Paiwan is subject to the double suppression from both the gender consciousness taboos in the big society and gender culture conflicts in Paiwan society. The suppression further reinforces the problems of gender discrimination. Issues of gender identification have been suppressed and ignored by the communities and families, which has consequently impeded the imagination about gender among Paiwan youngsters and their choices of gender identification as well as development. In Taiwan’s gender equity movement, the gender diversity discussion among indigenous peoples is not the mainstream. When indigenous peoples fight for the rights of gender diversity, they also have to tackle the problems of ethnic discrimination at the same time.

Taking the form of a dance video, which is a popular form of performing art nowadays, this work is expressed through images instead of on-site performances. This innovation opens up new possibilities for the art of dance to develop its unique expressional aesthetics without the need for any cultural or linguistic embellishment.
